How to join an online meeting in Zoom

It is easy to join an online meeting using Zoom. You will need:

An internet connection – broadband wired or wireless
A computer with speakers (headsets or earbuds may replace speakers).


You will receive an email from us with a link to join the Zoom meeting. It will look like this:

Click the link to open your web browser to join the meeting. 

When entering a Zoom meeting for the first time from a computer you will need to download a small application file.

This process is easy to complete on all commonly used browsers. The examples below are shown using Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome.


Mozilla Firefox



Click ‘Save File’  and follow the instruction in the orange box.

Google Chrome



Google Chrome should automatically download the file and point to it as shown above. Clicking on the Zoom_launcher.exe file will install Zoom, there will be a short pause before a blue progress bar appears indicating the installation.

Please wait for the host to start this meeting

If the host hasn’t started broadcasting the webinar or is preparing using a practice session, you’ll receive the following message:



Register

When the webinar opens, register with your name and email in the box provided




Audio Settings


After joining the Zoom webinar you can test your computer’s audio to ensure that it’s working correctly.

1. Click the Settings button in the upper left hand corner of the screen to open the settings window.
2. Click the Test Speaker button to test your speakers.
3. Click Stop to end the test.

Note: All microphones are muted in a webinar so you don’t need to test your microphone

Chat

  1. On the menu at the bottom, click Chat. This displays the Zoom Group Chat panel to the right of your Zoom main room. If your Participants panel is open, you will be able to view the chat panel at the bottom of the Participants panel as in the image above.
  2. To use the group chat feature, i.e. send a text message to all participants, type your message in the text box at the bottom of the chat panel and press Enter.
  3. To send a private message to another participant, in the To field, click the down arrow, and then from the drop down list, click the name of the participant you want to text.
  4. To open and view the chat panel in a separate window, click the down arrow in the top-left corner of the chat panel, and then from the menu, click Pop Out.
